Prosecutor: U.S. soldier had blood of Afghan massacre victims on him

JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. (AP) ? A caped figure captured on surveillance video came running out of the darkness to the edge of a remote Army outpost in southern Afghanistan. Blood was smeared on his face, prosecutors said, and soaked into his clothes.

Less than a mile away, 16 Afghans, including nine children, were dead, some of their bodies on fire in two villages.

As fellow soldiers stopped him at the base's gate, Staff Sgt. Robert Bales was incredulous, prosecutors said. Then, as he was taken into custody, Bales said: "I thought I was doing the right thing."

The details, from a prosecutor as well as Bales' comrades, emerged Monday as a preliminary hearing in his case opened, offering the clearest picture yet of one of the worst atrocities of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

The attack on March 11 prompted the U.S. to halt combat operations for days in the face of protests, and it was a month before military investigators could reach the crime scenes.

Bales, 39, faces 16 counts of premeditated murder and six counts of attempted murder. The hearing could last up to two weeks and will help determine whether the case goes to a court martial.

The defense did not give an opening statement.

Bales has not entered a plea. His attorneys have not discussed the evidence, but say Bales has post-traumatic stress disorder and suffered a concussive head injury during a prior deployment to Iraq.

The father of two from Lake Tapps, Wash., wore green fatigues and sat beside one of his civilian lawyers as an investigating officer read the charges against him and informed him of his rights.

When asked if he understood them, Bales said, "Sir, yes, sir."

Bales spent the March night before the raids at Camp Belambay, watching "Man On Fire," a fictional account of a former CIA operative on a revenge spree, with his fellow soldiers, said Lt. Col. Jay Morse, the prosecutor.

He seemed normal as they shared whiskey, discussed Bales' anxiety over whether he'd get a promotion and talked about another soldier who lost his leg a week earlier in a roadside bomb attack, Cpl. David Godwin testified.

Shortly before leaving the base, Bales told a Special Forces soldier that he was unhappy with his family life and that the troops should have been quicker to retaliate for the March 5 bomb attack, Morse said.

"At all times, he had a clear understanding of what he was doing and what he had done," said Morse, who described Bales as lucid and responsive.

Bales is accused of slipping away from the remote outpost with an M-4 rifle outfitted with a grenade launcher to attack the villages of Balandi and Alkozai, in a dangerous district.

Morse said Bales broke the killings into two episodes. Dressed in a T-shirt, Bales walked first to one village, return to the base and then slipped away again to carry out the second attack.

Between the episodes, Bales told a colleague about shooting people at one of the villages, Morse said. The soldier apparently took it as a bad joke and responded: "Quit messing around."

Prosecutors played for the first time the video captured by a surveillance blimp that showed the caped figure running toward the base, then stopping and dropping his weapons as he was confronted. There was no audio.

It wasn't immediately clear from where Bales got the cape.

As he stood outside the base, Godwin testified, Bales had asked him and another soldier: "Did you rat me out? Did you rat me out?"

Part of the hearing will be held overnight to allow video testimony from witnesses, including an estimated 10 to 15 Afghans, in Afghanistan.

Bales' attorney, John Henry Browne, said the hearing will give the defense a chance to see what the military can prove. He said they are expecting a court martial.

The Ohio native joined the Army in late 2001 ? after the 9/11 attacks ? as his career as a stockbroker imploded, including an arbitrator's $1.5 million fraud judgment against him and his former company.

Bales was serving his fourth combat tour after three stints in Iraq and his arrest prompted a national discussion about the stresses that soldiers face from multiple deployments.

His lawyers have said Bales remembers little or nothing from around the time of the attacks.

Emma Scanlan, one of his attorneys, declined to say to what extent the lawyers hope to elicit testimony that could be used to support a mental-health defense. Bales himself will not make any statements.

She said the Army had only recently turned over a preliminary DNA trace evidence report from the crime scenes, but defense experts have not had time to review it.

Obama congratulates Romney on "spirited campaign"

CHICAGO (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama congratulated Republican rival Mitt Romney on Tuesday for running a hard-fought race for the White House and expressed confidence he would win re-election during a stop at a local campaign office to thank volunteers.

"I ... want to say to Governor Romney congratulations on a spirited campaign. I know that his supporters are just as engaged and just as enthusiastic and working just as hard today," Obama said as volunteers made phone calls encouraging supporters to get to the polls.

"We feel confident we've got the votes to win, but it's going to depend ultimately on whether those votes turn out. And so I would encourage everybody on all sides just to make sure that you exercise this precious right that we have that people fought so hard for us to have."

Obama made calls to volunteers from the campaign office to thank them for working for his re-election.

"I expect that we'll have a good night, but no matter what happens, I just want to say how much I appreciate everybody who supported me, everybody who's worked so hard on my behalf," he said.

Opinion polls show Obama and Romney in a virtual dead heat, although the Democratic incumbent has a slight advantage in several vital swing states that could give him the 270 electoral votes needed to win the state-by-state contest.

Traditionally presidential candidates get media attention on Election Day by going to vote. But Obama cast his ballot in Chicago last month - part of his campaign's push to get its supporters to vote early.

So the president's visit to the office gave him a chance to get in front of the cameras, generate news coverage and encourage turnout.

Obama and Romney, a former Massachusetts governor and private equity executive, have fought a largely negative campaign. Obama's team attacked Romney for his business record, and Romney's team criticized the president for presiding over high unemployment and a slow economic recovery.

Obama's conciliatory comments represent the close of the bitter campaign and could appeal to last-minute undecided voters, who are turned off by the lack of bipartisanship in Washington.

In addition to his campaign office stop, Obama is doing a round of interviews and is expected to play basketball with friends, a tradition for the sports-loving president on Election Day.

Jive Software Acquires Meetings.io and Producteev To Enhance ...

Jive Software is acquiring meetings.io, a real-time communications platform, and Producteev, a cloud-based task management provider in a combined deal worth $7.6 million and 460,000 in Jive stock.

Meetings.io is a platform that Jive CEO Tony Zingale says fits into the company?s social platform by allowing screen sharing, video conferencing and the loosely fit pieces that make up a unified communications platform. The company?s technology ?has deep similarities to Google Hangouts but in my view it also fits into the browser sharing market that you find with services such as GoInstant, the company Salesforce.com acquired earlier this year for $70 million. ?Salesforce.com also has aspirations to develop a unified platform as illustrated in its DimDim acquisition almost two years ago.

The company is a a Y-Combinator alum. It launched in April with just under $1 million in seed funding from (among others) Yuri Milner and SV Angel, and the promise of making a free group video call as easy as clicking on a link, with nothing else required.

Producteev is designed to talke tasks out of email and into a more collaborative environment ? again a play that fits with Jive?s social platform.

The Producteev acquisition shows how intensive the market has come for task management companies. Klint Finley wrote recently about Producteev and how it competes with Facebook Co-Founder Dustin Moskovitz?s startup Asana and Salesforce.com?s Do.com.

Producteev launched at Le Web in 2008. According to Ingrid Lunden, the company had raised $1.31 million in funding and recently passed the 2,000 paying-customers milestone. Finley writes that among those customers are Apple, Disney, and the Financial Times. It?s free for individuals, and group plans range from $20 to $500. In addition to the web version, there are clients for iOS, Android, OSX, and Windows.

Zingale said the deals are consistent with Jive?s overall strategy in acquiring innovative technologies and strong teams.

The Jive acquisitions point to the increasing competition between Jive and Salesforce.com with Box.com right in the middle. Jive is seeking to add more lightweight video collaboration and task management to its collaborative platform. It has a deep partnership with Box, which should be a simple fit for companies that want to integrate file management into the play. Salesforce.com on the other hand is building its own file management service to compete with Box. Both Jive and Salesforce.com will force deeper competition in the task management space. The question: Who is going to buy Asana?

Humane Society of Atlantic County lends a helping paw

Posted 11/4/12 07:10 pm by Lynda Weed ( lweed@nbc40.net )

ATLANTIC CITY -- The destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy affected millions of people, but also left millions of pets seeking help as well.

Here in South Jersey the Humane Society is reaching out to help those animals, one paw at a time.

Dawn Reeckmann says she lost almost everything she owned as a result of Hurricane Sandy, but is thankful that she still gets to go home to the one thing that means the world to her.

"I went to rescue my cat. Friends held on to him, said Brigantine resident Dawn Reeckman. And that's why I am here today.

Alongside dozens of other people who say they are in the same boat.

"I lost everything in the house, and I have two dogs, and one cat, said Atlantic City resident, Lovey Devaney.

It's because of these families that the Humane Society of Atlantic County wants to give back to the community.

"We have food available for people on the barrier islands. We have dog and cat food available, said Humane Society representative, Steven Dash.

Iams donated all of the food being handed out by the Humane Society.

So far they have handed out thousands of bags to those in need, and will continue to do so all week long.

"We want to be a spot anyone can come get the supplies that they need, said Humane Society employee, Danielle Tustin. Be it food, or support, we want to be here for the community.

But while making sure they are there for their neighbors, the Humane Society is taking care of their own losses as well.

"We lost about $100,000 worth of supplies, said Dash. Medical supplies, and our food, so we are looking to rebuild those things."

The storm caused about two feet of flooding, damaging all of the shelter units.

The re-build began over the weekend, and employees say the new facility will allow them to help even more people than they could before.

To donate to the Humane Society of Atlantic County or find out how you can get food for your pets, call (609) 347-2487.

Obama favored in his ancestral Kenyan village

KOGELO, Kenya (AP) ? Here in President Barack Obama's ancestral village in Kenya, witch doctor John Dimo tossed some shells, bones and other items to determine who will win Tuesday's election.

After throwing the objects like so many dice outside his hut in Kogelo village, Dimo, who says he is 105 years old, points to a white shell and declares: "Obama is very far ahead and is definitely going to win."

It's not a surprising result in Kogelo, Obama's late father's hometown in western Kenya and where expectations of another Obama election victory were high on Monday.

Most Kenyans consider Obama, the son of a white mother from Kansas and a black father from Kenya, as one of their own. Barack Obama has five Kenyan half-brothers and a half-sister.
