Arafat's widow calls his death a mystery

VALLETTA, Malta (AP) ? The widow of Yasser Arafat says she sees a spiritual significance in the timing of her late husband's exhumation, which came just two days before a U.N. vote on whether to recognize a Palestinian state.

Suha Arafat told The Associated Press on Thursday at her home in Malta that the exhumation to determine whether Arafat had been poisoned "was as if his soul was resurrecting" ahead of Thursday's vote in the General Assembly.

Mrs. Arafat called the former Palestinian leader's death in November 2004, a month after suddenly falling ill, "the most important mystery of the Middle East."

Arafat's remains were exhumed in the West Bank on Tuesday in a renewed investigation into his death. Palestinian officials claim he was poisoned by Israel, which has denied the allegations.

Egyptian courts suspend work to protest Morsi move

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's highest appeal courts suspended their work Wednesday to protest presidential decrees that gave the country's Islamist leader Mohammed Morsi nearly absolute powers, state television reported, deepening the turmoil roiling the country since the decrees were announced last week.

A widening dispute between the president and the nation's judiciary is at the center of the uproar over a constitutional declaration placing Morsi above oversight of any kind, including by the courts. At least 200,000 protesters filled Cairo's central Tahrir Square on Tuesday to denounce the decrees and call on the president to rescind them.

Judges with the high and lower courts of appeal decided that they will not return to work until Morsi rescinds his decrees, according to state TV. Many of the country's courts already had stopped functioning due to individual strikes.

The high court of appeal is led by Mohammed Mumtaz Metwali, who also chairs the Supreme Judiciary Council, which oversees the nation's court system. Members of the council met Morsi on Monday to discuss his decrees.

A statement issued later by the presidential palace strongly suggested that the president's explanation of the decrees satisfied the council, but the panel has not publicly commented on the issue.

A statement by the judges of the high appeals court, known as the Court of Cassation, described Morsi's decrees as an "unprecedented" assault on the judiciary and its principles that "defies belief." It said the decision to stop work at all its circuits was also unprecedented but justified by the "magnitude" of the crisis.

In another show of defiance, the Supreme Constitutional Court, the nation's highest, rejected charges made by Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood that it is working to bring down his government.

The political turmoil was triggered Thursday when Morsi issued a constitutional declaration that placed him above oversight of any kind, including by the courts, and extended similar protection to parliament's lower chamber and a 100-member panel drafting a new constitution.

Morsi and his allies in the Muslim Brotherhood, which has emerged as the most powerful political movement since the revolution that ousted Hosni Mubarak nearly two years ago, have accused the judiciary of being dominated by Mubarak-era appointees who are trying to undermine the new leader.

The constitutional court ruled in June to dissolve parliament's lower chamber, which is dominated by Islamists, and was due to rule Sunday on the legality of the lower chamber and a 100-member panel drafting a new constitution.

A ruling, regardless of which way it goes, would constitute a direct challenge to Morsi, who took office in June as Egypt's first freely elected president but has enraged pro-democracy activists who claim he is acting too much like the authoritarian leader he replaced.

The court also denounced Morsi's claim that it was part of a "conspiracy" against him.

"The allegation that the (June) ruling was reached in complicity with others to bring down elected state institutions and consequently the state's collapse ... is incorrect and untrue," the constitutional court said in a statement read by its deputy chairman, Maher Sami, in a televised news conference.

"But what is most saddening for the court's judges came when the president of the republic joined, in a painful and cruel surprise, the continuing attacks against the constitutional court," it said, alluding to comments made by Morsi on Friday in which he said the June ruling was leaked ahead of its official announcement.

A strike by the appeals courts and the rare criticism of the president in the Supreme Constitutional Court's statement came a day after Egyptians poured into Tahrir Square ? the epicenter of last year's anti-Mubarak uprising ? to protest Morsi's decrees, which also gave him unlimited powers to "protect" the nation.

Clashes between some protesters and police continued Wednesday off Tahrir, near the U.S. Embassy.

The liberal opposition has said it would not enter a dialogue with the president about the country's latest political crisis before Morsi rescinded his decrees. Activists planned another massive rally on Friday.

Collierville mayor defends municipal sales tax

Suburban leaders are still working to carry out voters' wishes to create their own schools, one way or another.

"We moved forward in our planning based on that true mandate," said?Collierville Mayor Stan Joyner.?

Collierville is one of six municipalities collecting an extra half-cent sales tax to start their own school system.?

But that changed when a judge ruled municipal schools unconstitutional Tuesday.

"Our fiscal year ends June the 30th. We'll collect it until that point," said Joyner.

Mayor Stan Joyner says a Collierville board voted on a clear directive for the $4 million.

"This current board passed a resolution that pledges that money be used for education. A future board might change that," he said.

He said the board also has a fail-safe.

"Part of the resolution was the money would be given back to the taxpayer in the form of a one-time decrease in the property tax rate. Two different taxpayers there," said Joyner.

Mayors across the county said they'll form their own schools somehow, even if they can't start municipal schools.

"If something happened and down the road we don't get our school system, we will spend those fund for past debts and that type thing," said Joyner.?

Suburban voters have always maintained they're willing to pay.

According to Joyner, it's an understanding that taxpayers knew the risk going in.

Castletown Hotel & Golf Club

In the middle of the Irish Sea, the Isle of Man is reached be ferry or by air from Blackpool.?

Castletown is located on a sort of triangular-shaped peninsula surrounded by sea. They say that on the 17th hole a sliced drive could end up in Ireland, Scotland, England or Wales.

Whatever, this course is exposed to all winds and only the bunkers give any real shelter. Only a few small dunes and rocks give any relief to this flat, superbly-turfed landscape.?

The absence of any really high dunes also allows some splendid views over the cliffs, rocks and the Irish Sea.?

After the war Mackenzie Ross brought Castletown back to life with all the talent he showed at Turnberry and even a tough of genius.?

This is a golfers paradise on the edge of a rock, but it can be hell if ever a storm sets in and sends players scampering to seek refuge in the huge and very comfortable hotel on the course.

Why does it seem that agents are scared of clients interviewing other ...

It has confounded me for some time, since we had our start in 1998 with REMAX. Why it is that agents are scared to talk about interviewing multiple real estate agents before choosing one? What could be the reason for this? Could it be insecurity rearing it?s ugly head? What about not having the ?competitive spirit??

I know this hits some Santa Clarita real estate agents like a fart in Church, but it is a necessary step to anyone buying or selling a home. It is necessary for you to interview multiple agents. I?ll throw selfish at you now, ?I hope we are one of those you interview?? However, I get it if we are not, you may walk into that first office of that first Top Producing Real Estate agent and be swooned off of your feet ? it happens.

But for the other 99.9% of you, put us down as one of the Real Estate agents you want to interview and question. When it comes to buying or selling a home there have been studies done by the Big Syndication websites about how the buyers/sellers felt of their agent. Here is the break down:

70% said they would not recommend the realtor they choose to friends or family.

What a statement. There was another fact that reared it?s head in this Feedback forum for Real Estate. That was the fact most people work with 7 agents before buying a home.

So, 70% of those that bought a home did not like their agent enough to recommend them and most of those buyers work with 7 agents before buying a home.

It seems that someone is asleep at the Santa Clarita real estate wheel? I think it comes down to this, some agents are afraid of answering the phone or picking up the phone and calling back. Most agents are scared to say something is wrong. Most are terrified to give the ?bad and unpleasant? scenarios that apply when buying a home. Some agents will even close a real estate transaction if their buyer or seller are placing themselves at risk.

Do some Googleing, look at Bing ? run some real estate keywords in the search engines related to real estate. See who comes up in the SERP?s ? Search engine result pages. Weed out the real estate syndication websites and focus on the local real estate agents websites. Click through on a few that are on the first page and start making your calls. BTW ? if there is no phone number or physical ?local address? for the real estate agent on their website?s home page ? move onto the next.

Be Safe ? Search well and join the Paris911 Team for our Daily Real Estate show on our Main Santa Clarita real estate blog. click here for our Santa Clarita real estate blog

Fantastic On-Hand Resource: The Homeschooling Book of Lists

I rarely find home education materials in big-box bookstores, so you can imagine my surprise when this book jumped off the shelf and into my hands. Michael and Mary Leppert?s comprehensive The Homeschooling Book of Lists is a resource I consult quite regularly. And here?s why: it?s jam packed with information.

More than just another guide to homeschooling, The Homeschooling Book of Lists is a compendium of homeschooling resources, publishers, suppliers, publications, websites, and other references. It?s divided into five major sections:

  • Things to Consider Before Homeschooling
  • Homeschooling Models and Methods
  • Subjects and Lesson Plans
  • Homeschooling Resources
  • Getting Your Homeschooled Student into College

Each section then branches out into a wide variety of topics to explore and consider. For example, Part 4, Homeschooling Resources, comprises 20 different lists, such as:

  • Various religious resource lists
  • Ethnic resources
  • Boxed curricula
  • Homeschooling with nonelectric games
  • Special needs resources
  • Tutors and tutoring
  • Testing and test prep
  • Charter schools and independent study programs

Of course, any print materials that list website URLs run the risk that those addresses won?t always be valid. The same holds true for this manual. However, a simple Google search enabled me to find whatever I needed, so this really isn?t an issue.

I?m always on the lookout for new and different resources to enrich my children?s education, but I don?t have a lot of time to devote to this particular activity. The Homeschooling Book of Lists?makes it easy for me. In fact, ?my own copy of this handy reference tool for busy homeschooling families boasts highlighted and dog-eared pages ? and for good reason!

LEGAL EXPERTS WEIGH IN ON BERRY/AUBRY CUSTODY SAGA

Halle Berry is reportedly off to court this week in an effort to extend a temporary restraining order against her ex Gabriel Aubry, following the Thanksgiving punch-up with the actress? current partner, actor Olivier Martinez.

If granted, Aubry, 36, could lose rights to see his four-year-old daughter, Nahla, for an indefinite amount of time, according to family law experts.

?A restraining order is a game-changer,? attorney Diana Mercer told Celebuzz. ?If this restraining order holds up, the legal presumption is Gabriel can?t have joint custody of any kind.?

Mercer, author of Making Divorce Work: 8 Essential Keys for Resolving Conflict and Rebuilding Your Life, said the court would decide the fate of the Canadian-born father based on whether ?your judgment is poor? and thus you can?t have legal or physical custody of the child.?

Berry?s lawyers have previously argued that Aubry has an uncontrollable temper.

The pair dated for four years before their split in 2010 and since have become embroiled in a bitter court battle over custody of Nahla.

Earlier this month, a judge denied the actress? request to move to France with Nahla and Martinez ? a decision widely considered a court victory for Aubry. He argued the move to France would have been punitive and was designed to stop him from having contact with his daughter.

?The biggest thing is going to be that restraining order hearing,? added Mercer.

She said Berry ?can go back in (to court) and ask for modification of the moving order,? she said. ?It would have been better if Olivier had stayed out of it. But thanks to O.J. Simpson, the police err on the side of caution.?

But Darren Kavinoky, a Los Angeles based criminal attorney, said the Cloud Atlas star shouldn?t expect the judge?s decision to be reversed completely.

?Just because he behaves badly, she would not be able to relocate to France. In other words, I wouldn?t go renew my passport now,? said Kavinoky.

But Kavinoky said Aubry?s ability to have custody of Nahla is in question.

?This whole incident gives rise to a renewed discussion? in terms of him being able to parent appropriately,? he said.

?I would expect that if she [Berry] is looking for renewed leverage, now she has it. This incident opens the doors to raise the issue about his capability of managing his own behavior.?

If the court believes that as a result of his inability to control his own impulses that his abilities to parent are compromised, then it?s possible that his visitations would be limited,? he said, ?and it?s possible that he could only be with his kid under monitored supervision.

?What the court is going to be struggling with is asking themselves if his ability to control himself spills over to his parenting ? or just limited to just the new man in his daughter?s life.

?Even if it?s found that in this instance he had too much testosterone for his own good, if I?m on his side, I?m going to argue ?I may not play well with other grown-ups, but I can still be an effective, loving parent.?

?With this issue,? Kavinoky added, ?ultimately the court has a lot of discretion to do what?s in the best interest of the child.?

IOC chief backs plan for 4-year doping bans

AMSTERDAM (AP) ? IOC President Jacques Rogge supports proposals to double the length of doping bans to four years as a way of keeping drug cheats out of the Olympics.

The World Anti-Doping Agency is planning to raise the penalty from two to four years for serious drug violations in the next version of the global anti-doping code, which comes up for approval next year and goes into effect in 2015.

"We are waiting for the final text but already what is on the table today is something that is heartening for us," Rogge said Monday at conference in Amsterdam.

Rogge said the proposal "is something that satisfies us in that it endorses increasing sanctioning for what I would call heavy doping."

He said the change would be in line with the International Olympic Committee's previous failed attempt to bar any athlete slapped with a ban of more than six months from competing in the subsequent Olympics.

The so-called "Osaka Rule" was thrown out last year by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on grounds that the sanction represented a second penalty for the same offense and did not comply with the WADA code.

WADA's proposed four-year bans should serve the same purpose as the IOC rule.

"This is something that is completely in line with the Osaka Rule, because the Osaka Rule was to stop the athletes to participate in the next games if their penalty was higher than six months," Rogge said. "Now with this high penalty of four years, automatically you don't participate in the next games."

Rogge also said the IOC is still studying the case against Lance Armstrong to see if it can strip the American cyclist of the bronze medal he won in the time trial at the 2000 Sydney Games.

Armstrong has already been stripped of his seven Tour de France titles for involvement in what the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency called the biggest doping conspiracy in sports.

The IOC must consider its eight-year statute of limitations before deciding whether to take away Armstrong's Olympic medal.

"There is still legal work to be done," Rogge said.

Iran plans new oil storage, airline hikes fares

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran is planning to build new oil storage facilities so it can store more of the fuel it is having a hard time selling due to Western sanctions over its disputed nuclear program.

State-run Press TV quoted Mahmoud Zirakchianzadeh, Director of the Iranian Offshore Oil Company, as saying nearly 8.1 million barrels will be added to Iran's crude oil storage capacity by the next summer.

Iran has the world's third largest proven oil reserves and was OPEC's second largest exporter, but sanctions have stymied the flow since summer. It slipped to the cartel's third place in July after the European Union imposed oil sanctions to force Tehran to stop its uranium enrichment program.

According to the International Energy Agency, Iran's oil exports plunged to 1 million barrels a day in July, after standing at the 1.74-million-barrel mark a month earlier. Crude oil exports account for about 80 percent of the country's foreign revenue.

The U.S. and its allies accuse Iran of using its nuclear program as a cover to develop nuclear weapons. Iran has denied the charges, saying its program is geared toward generating electricity and producing radioisotopes to treat cancer patients.

In another sign sanctions are biting, Iran's national airline has nearly doubled prices on plane tickets for some foreign destinations. Iran Air spokesman Shahrokh Nooshabadi was quoted by local media as saying the carrier raised prices by up to 90 percent because of higher fuel prices and the plunging value of the rial against foreign currencies.

Iranian media say other airline companies have also hiked prices on flights abroad. In November, prices for Iranian domestic flights by Iran Air rose some 70 percent.

Redknapp mulls move to sign Beckham for QPR

Associated Press Sports

updated 2:42 p.m. ET Nov. 25, 2012

LONDON (AP) -New Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp is considering making a move to bring David Beckham to the London Premier League club.

The 37-year-old former England captain is leaving the Los Angeles Galaxy after six seasons next month in search of a new challenge.

Redknapp told the BBC he's sure Beckham "could still play in the Premier League," adding: "I've not discussed it with the chairman so we'd have to look at that."

In 2011 Beckham trained during the Major League offseason with Tottenham, which Redknapp was managing at the time.

A day after being hired by QPR, Redknapp said Sunday that Beckham "could still be a great asset to anyone. Just having him round the place, showing people how to train and look after yourself."

made before local mobile operators

Signs

preparation of this transition occurred in July this year when Samsung ? number three local mobile market ? launch the first of its kind subscription market with unlimited calls to any destination. Four months later and Orange telecom market leader, announced a series of changes in offer subscriptions where the keyword was ?unlimited? ? but only for certain services. Vodafone, the second player in the local mobile market, did not currently visible steps in this direction, but there is also the strategy group at a time could be applied in Romania. Customers most expensive subscriptions ? Panther range ? received unlimited internet access, mobile TV services and online music service Deezer, which provides access to over 20 million songs.

the Vodafone group there is a strategy to launch in some markets subscriptions with unlimited voice and SMS, said in a meeting with analysts and investors Vittorio Colao, chief executive of mobile.

What is the reason for operators to launch such tariff plans? ?Providing customers with subscriptions unlimited voice and SMS reduce threats from over-the-top players (who provide Internet services), because once you unlimited voice and unlimited SMS, there is a huge advantage for use applications such as WhatsApp or Skype. proposal is a very valuable from our customers that simplifies life (?), ?said Vittorio Colao. Customers, says the head of Vodafone, would be able to choose between subscriptions with unlimited voice and SMS without a subsidized phone ? in which case the price will be lower, and such subscriptions plus a subsidized phone ? in which case the rate will be higher, depending on the selected handset. In addition to this option ? to choose or not a subsidized phone ? the main differentiator between tariff plans will be linked to access to mobile internet and cloud. ?All subscriptions include unlimited calls and unlimited SMS, but mobile internet packages will be different from each other, because there will be different levels of use and differences in the speed data services and access to cloud services? said Vittorio Colao.

company RCS & RDS, the local market leader TV and internet service fixed, but the smallest player in the local mobile market has currently produced only unlimited landline calls, but estimated that the same will happen and mobile segment.

?We believe that the Internet is the future. need to create products that voice calls are included in a product with a fixed, because from now on will move Internet voice,? Valentine said recently Popoviciu Development Director operator. RCS & RDS offers such a product landline subscribers, who can call on any network unlimited national fixed for a subscription of 2.5 euro per month.

big question about these new offers will however be linked to rates that will be offered to customers in Romania and to what extent the market will accept and will migrate to this model.

premise is not necessarily optimistic: a Romanian pays on average 5-6 per month for TV services and about 7 euros per month for mobile services. A mobile subscriber pays an average of 13-14 euros per month, while a user is allocated monthly prepay less than 5 euros.

Instead, Cosmote launched tariff plan with unlimited calls to any national network, which does not include unlimited national SMS and has a price of 31 euros. As the first plan of its kind in Romania, COSMOTE tariff plan automatically becomes the reference for landing operators could also launch subscriptions with unlimited voice and SMS ? then the question arises, given the purchasing power of Romanians to what extent there is a consistent group of users ready to step into such a ?scheme?.

What would be the target group for this type of membership, given tier tariff of around 30 euros per month? A Gallup survey published late last year found that approximately 6% of consumer customers of mobile services amounts paid monthly pass ? 100-150 per month. With regard to companies, they pay an average of about 25 subscription per month per user, according to the same source.

At the end of last year in Romania there were 4.78 million individual subscribers to mobile services, which had 6.42 million SIM cards and 740,000 subscribers to the same service firms, which had 2.94 million of senses .

But the price of subscriptions and speed with which these deals will appear on the market depends to a large extent will decrease the pace at which mobile interconnection rates, from 3.07 cents, as they are today. Percentage decrease and the range in which it will be operated will be decided by the Regulatory Authority for Communications of Romania (ANCOM). Consultations on this subject is still in its infancy.

(AP) ? The leaders of Britain and France staked out starkly different visions of the European Union's future Thursday, leaving a summit on the EU budget teetering on the brink of failure after the first day.

"I have my doubts that we will come to an agreement," said German Chancellor Angela Merkel after a chaotic day of bilateral negotiations and a belated, short joint session of the 27 leaders.

While British Prime Minister David Cameron is seeking to keep payments into EU coffers as low as possible, French President Francois Hollande called for sustained subsidies for farming and development programs for poorer nations.

With each of the 27 nations having the power of veto over the 2014-2020 budget, the summit negotiations could stretch over the weekend, perhaps without result.

Cameron voiced the concerns of several countries that do not want to see an increase in the bloc's spending plan at a time when many member states are cutting budgets at home.

"No, I'm not happy at all," Cameron said about EU President Herman Van Rompuy's offer to cap spending for 2014-2020 at ?972 billion ($1.25 trillion) in spending commitments.

"Clearly, at a time when we're making difficult decisions at home over public spending, it would be quite wrong ? it is quite wrong ? for there to be proposals for this increased extra spending in the EU," Cameron said.

Van Rompuy's revised proposal late Thursday did not yield further to Cameron's demands for cuts, keeping to the same total.

The EU budget primarily funds programs to help farming and spur growth in the bloc's less developed countries, and it amounts to about 1 percent of the EU's gross domestic product.

Hollande and Merkel said another summit meeting might be necessary.

"We should not consider that if we don't get there tomorrow or the day after, all would be lost," Hollande said.

"Germany wants to reach a goal, but there might also be the need for yet another stage," Merkel said.

The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, supports more spending, arguing that cross-border initiatives will help create the economic growth and jobs that the bloc of a half-billion people needs, particularly during a financial crisis that has pushed some countries into recession.

The amount of work Van Rompuy has to do to bring the conflicting views closer together was highlighted earlier Thursday as the bilateral meetings preceding the summit overran, forcing the opening discussions to be delayed by 2 ? hours.

Bilateral talks will resume early Friday, with a first joint session set for noon to see if a compromise is within reach.

Facing an ever more vocal euroskeptic electorate at home in the U.K., Cameron is under huge pressure to veto any seven-year deal which would make the budget bigger. The U.K. and other countries that contribute more then they receive from the budget ? such as the Netherlands, Sweden and Germany ? claim an austerity budget is the only justifiable outcome at a time when almost every member state has to cut its budget to lower debt.

Meanwhile, 15 of the EU's most financially and economically vulnerable countries have joined forces to oppose any cuts to funds earmarked for economic growth and development. These countries include not only traditionally poorer member states, many in Eastern Europe, but also those hit hardest by the financial crisis, like Greece, Portugal and Spain.

They argue that they need sustained, even increased, help to close the wealth gap on the continent and that EU institutions need the means to implement their jobs and growth policies.

"Certain countries want to make drastic reductions in the budget. That's a big mistake," said Elio Di Rupo, Belgium's prime minister.

There is no set deadline for a deal, but the closer it gets to 2014, the tougher it will be for a smooth introduction of new programs.

"In talks with colleagues, I had one message. If this doesn't work out at once, let's be sure that the mood is not that dark that we have to spend months on patching up personal relationships," Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said.

If there is no deal up to 2014, there would be a rollover of the 2013 budget plus a 2 percent increase accounting for inflation.

Gaining favourable child custody and well-being from being thankful

Tomorrow will come and go for many in traditional fashion: the gathering amongst friends and family, the chatter of banal conversation overplayed against a sporting type event presented on the television, the typical rote recitation of a prescribed thanks followed by the indulgence of a feast. If that rings familiar with you then I offer to you the opportunity to mix it up a bit this year. Not break from traditions but to focus on the deeper impact of giving thanks and to whom, especially for those of you with children.

This is not necessarily targeted to those of you embroiled in a custody battle or high conflict relationship, although you may receive greater benefit, but also those who are ?happily married?. Often overlooked is the importance of maintenance of our interpersonal relationships. Like clock-work some people will have the oil changed on their automobiles, replace various filters, even go so far as to engage in ?health? care by having regular check-ups. But somehow relationships don't receive the same attention, or maybe they do. There are opportunities for regular relationship check-ups such as marriage and birthday anniversaries ? I am somehow bothered that people will still refer to my birthday in the present tense although it occurred over 40 years ago ? but I think they go unfulfilled.

These anniversaries are a time to give reverence to their underlying event and be thankful. The presentation of gifts has become a commercialized acknowledgment of the event with little or no significance or feeling. A birthday card should express your gratitude that the recipient exists and include thanks that you are of part of that person's life. Likewise so should the wedding anniversary card. It may even be appropriate to express a more contrite display of gratitude that your spouse has put up with an accepted your petulant ass for another year.

So when tomorrow roles around take an opportunity to disengage from the banter of retail opportunities and gross commercialism of another upcoming holiday and consider your thanks. It is popular to claim greatest thanks for your children although so parents do view them as a burden and the bane of a carnal interlude.

While you should and may be thankful for having a child and the challenges, joy, heartache, pain and pleasures ? yes, all of those -- that your child brings into life that thanks must be extended. Your child is not yours alone. You had a partner in that glorious creation. If that partner will be with you tomorrow then I suggest that you take a moment to sincerely express the richness of the rewards that your union has brought to your life. If that partner is no longer living then take a moment to give reverence to that person's life and that which is carried on through your child.

Now for the BIG LEAP. For those of you who do not enjoy ? or in any lesser sense ? cohabitation with that partner of said glorious creation you must also give thanks. My ex-wife ? the mother of our son ? and I had a notoriously hostile dissolution replete with regular police involvement and my having to wear body armour and have an armed security escort at times. Yet I have forgiven all of that. We are far from buddy-buddy now but our tenuous relationship is much less hostile now and although not reflective of the previously shared intimacies it is peppered with civility. I have expressed to her my thanks that I was the person for whom she chose to bear a child and that we both continue to care for, nurture and support our son, albeit in different environments.

Are you still with me? I want you to express sincere gratitude to that person who may have bankrupted you, taken your child out of your daily life and caused distress detrimental to your well-being. That person who may have pointed a gun at you and threatened to kill you. That's the person that I feel you should give thanks to in a meaningful manner. This is for you not that other parent.

Trust me on this one. You will find this to be step towards greater tranquility, harmony and balance in your life. Your psychological and physiological well-being will benefit.

Now reading: Etiquette: Not Quite Home for the Holidays in ...

Oh, there?s no place like home for the holidays, unless you?re somewhere else. Maybe you?ve moved away from your family and you just can?t make it home, or maybe you?re splitting the holidays as a much-begrudged favor to your significant other. Whatever your situation, it can lead to discomfort and awkwardness if you?re a guest in someone?s home.

But do not fret, dear Reader, for I have some hints to help you make some holiday magic.

#1: Embrace the Awkwardness, Padawan. This is essentially a party where you don?t know anyone, but that?s okay because it?s the holidays and everybody here wants to like you JUST BECAUSE. It?s like you?re cheating at the game of friendship. Be personable. Smile often. Know that you?re a stranger in a strange land and just be yourself. Circulate amongst groups to introduce yourself and go where the party goes. DO NOT be that girl who just clings to the one person she knows. You look needy and rude.

#2: Go with the Flow. Different people have different holiday traditions. On Christmas Eve in my family, we have an early family dinner, and then enjoy cocktails and finger food later. In other families, Christmas Eve is spent at church. Some people have turkey on Easter. (I try not to judge, but seriously?) Do not look down your nose at other people?s traditions. Just go with those traditions and try to have fun. DO NOT try to force your traditions on other people. Just sneak off and make phone calls once in a while to see if your mother has had too much special eggnog yet.

#3: Bring Something. ?Never arrive empty-handed,? is a typical rule for being a guest. Traditionally called a hostess gift, your trinket does not have to be expensive or lavish, merely thoughtful. Consider bringing a plate of homemade cookies or another dessert to add to the table. Perhaps something small or decorative will do. And if it?s a gift-giving holiday, a present just for the host, like tickets to a movie or a framed photo never goes astray. If all else fails, you can always default to a bottle of wine, but don?t be offended if it doesn?t get opened that night, and maybe avoid that route if your host doesn?t imbibe.

#4: On That Note, Avoid Alcoholic Tendencies. I don?t feel I need to explain myself for this one. Just limit yourself to two or three drinks. Unless everyone else is really going for it, then just try to stay two behind your host. You?ll look really classy.

#5: Offer to Help. Few things are more annoying than that guest who eats, sits, and leaves. Offer to help set or clear the table. Corral any little kids and keep them busy so they?re not underfoot when they would just cause trouble. Help elderly people to and from their cars. This kind of behavior will go farther toward making a good impression than just about anything else.

The Source of Growth and Creativity | Self improvement tips

Bare attention (to objects, people and circumstances) is what brings order in this world and in your personal world. If you know how to move your attention without the involvement of mind, positive creation happens as a result. Attention is literally a life response whereas mind is reaction out of memory and reaffirmation of the past. Attention is not same as thinking mind but it constitutes pure awareness moving itself through different objects without creating friction.

I am stating below some examples as to how life responds to the power of attention. Here?s one:

One small business owner decided to give attention to his accounts, balanced eight months of back bank statements, and miraculously received $5000 from nowhere the next day.

The key is attention without interpretation of the situation. A mere attention and intention to improve is sufficient.

If you bring your personal or business accounts fully and accurately up to date, you?ll be able to watch the money flow to you!

Money is not the only thing that responds to attention. So do ordinary objects and things. Consider this example:

A businessperson was unable to make any substantial sales. He was told that he should give attention to and evaluate his remaining current stocks, and then make a full effort to sell them off. After making an effort of selling but a few of the minimal stocks, an order arrived equal to six months of normal sales!

We have often seen this phenomenon where a business owner concerned by low sales or cash made the effort to sell off remaining unsold stocks, and life responded by bringing more sales. This is a powerful example of the power of attention to objects and things.

One way we give attention is by adopting the personal value of maximizing the way you use your current resources, such as money, materials, and time. Here?s an example of how one manufacturer applied the value of maximum utilization of a limited resource, which resulted in a very favorable situation for the company:

?In the manufacture of welding electrodes, Low Carbon Ferro Manganese is one of the main raw materials. The manufacturer who was supplying us suddenly informed that their plant is shut down for maintenance and that there will not be any supply from them for the next two months. It is an expensive material so the stock holding was minimum. There are only very few manufacturers of this item and they are all located at far away places. We had little time to arrange supply from other sources. The stock on hand was sufficient for 5 days of production only. We decided that not a particle of LCF should be wasted and alerted all the workers to be extra careful. The shop floor was swept thoroughly and all the spilled material were collected, screened and used. We provided attention to what could immediately be attended. Coincidentally, within two days, a Managing Director of a company manufacturing LCF in Orissa (which is about 1300 kilometers away from Pondicherry) visited our unit; over the phone (from Pondicherry) he instructed his plant to dispatch material to us. From the previous supplier we were buying the material against payment. Where as this company offered us a credit of 30 days. We did not negotiate any terms with them. They themselves agreed to supply at the same price. We were frank in telling them the precarious situation we were in. In spite of knowing our weak situation, they did not take any undue advantage. We are continuing with them.?

Moral is they didn?t wasted the material further and alerted all the workers to be extra careful. The shop floor was swept thoroughly and all the spilled material were collected, screened and used. They provided attention to what could be immediately attended. Moral is mere attentions to a situation without being caught up in its interpretation brings order into it. One need not worry, anxiety (using mind) but need to attend to immediate things including the people and objects and the universe arranges rest of the trappings to bring in the harmony into the area of attention.

Here?s a closely related example of the power of attention to things through the application of the value of maximum utilization, and life response:

X, the proprietor of a company, engaged Y as his consultant to improve his business. Y, the consultant, noticed a machine, which X deemed not useful to his present business, kept in a sorry state. Y requested X to repair and repaint it and keep it ready for production. X laughed and said, ?This machine

is idle for last many years without any order. I can not spend money on it. As soon as I get orders, I will repair and repaint the machine.? Y thought X was looking at things in the wrong way.

Y told X, ?If you keep machine ready for production and if you genuinely wish that this machine should yield profits, you will get orders. Life will favorably respond.?

X followed Y?s suggestion. After a day or two, X?s cousin, an engineer, came to his factory. The newly painted machine gained his attention. He took interest in the machine. He told X that he was interested in starting a new factory. If X could give the machine to him, he could earn profit from the first month onwards and a share of the income would go to X. An agreement was struck and the machine became a cash cow.

Moral is begin with trust that in the end everything will be organized and take your first step forward in the trust that the universe will arrange the trapping, your job is to attend the immediate objects, people and rest will follow on its own timing. In this case they attended a machine deemed not useful to his present business.

So all sorts of things respond to attention; animate and inanimate!

One final example will show how the power of attention is tied in to organizing things one level higher than it is currently organized.

A company had just launched a new product, yet did not yet have any sales on the product, despite considerable effort. One day the manager decided to go through the operations manual to update it to the latest information, including procedures related to the new product. He did this late in the work day. Early the very next morning he saw the first order for the product come in through the company?s web site.

Finally, let?s not forget to mention that people also, of course, respond to attention.

Mind creates friction, attention creates movement. If you experience movement without friction, its attention and not the mind and you can assume that you are in a creative state. We invite restlessness through preconceived ideas about the state of reality. Creativity begins when you can stabilize in a chaotic environment looking at it as an ever expanding life rather than mere problems; all the chaos is a life itself expanding to create new bridges where there are none. As a result, trust takes over fear and panic. New things or events or people are seen as opportunities to organize the life one step up. It is through chaos that the new order is borne, so chaos need not be seen as something to fear about but life itself stretching the limits to organize one step further. A relaxed attitude takes over the panic and fear.

Attention itself brings in the order when used wisely in a trusting manner. Things are disorganized on account of lack of attention and ignorance of it?s values.

Attention brings in the order. Place your attention in the areas where you seek improvements, hang out loosely expecting to improve the area, rest will follow. Key is identify the area, focus loosely and intend the desired result.

Seek with the attitude (state of existence) that you are already fulfilled and perfect in areas where you seek improvements, the acting and attitude of the perfection at every step itself consolidates into the ultimate end perfection. Move yourself consciously attending whatever needs to be attended here and now.

You trust and move one step toward unknown and simultaneously unknown moves one step towards you bridging the gap between harmony and disharmony. Your attention itself is your one step towards the unknown and if you consistently moves your attention in the desired direction with the intention to improve the life, unknown is moving towards you simultaneous bringing in all the necessary elements to bring harmony into your life.

Universe responds not to just fulfill your individual whims and fancies but to bring in greater order for greater good.

There is always a response to attention since it has capacity for positive movement where has mind has fixed notions which restricts movement.

Attention enables movement, whereas beliefs blocks movement.

Engineered bacteria can make the ultimate sacrifice

Wednesday, November 21, 2012

Scientists have engineered bacteria that are capable of sacrificing themselves for the good of the bacterial population. These altruistically inclined bacteria, which are described online in the journal Molecular Systems Biology, can be used to demonstrate the conditions where programmed cell death becomes a distinct advantage for the survival of the bacterial population.

"We have used a synthetic biology approach to explicitly measure and test the adaptive advantage of programmed bacterial cell death in Escherichia coli," said Lingchong You, senior author of the study and an associate professor at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, Duke University, and the Duke Institute for Genome Sciences & Policy. "The system is tunable which means that the extent of altruistic death in the bacterial population can be increased. We are therefore able to control the extent of programmed cell death as well as test the benefits of altruistic death under different conditions." The lead author of the study is Yu Tanouchi, a graduate student in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. Anand Pai and Nicolas Buchler also contributed to the work.

Scientists have known for some time that programmed cell death can be linked to the response of bacteria to stressful conditions, for example starvation of amino acids or the presence of competitor molecules. However, it is not clear why cells should choose to die under such conditions since it gives them no immediate advantages. Some researchers have suggested that programmed cell death allows cells to provide benefits to their survivors but until now it has been difficult to test this directly in experiments.

The researchers used synthetic biology procedures to engineer Escherichia coli in such a way that the bacterial cells are capable of suicidal behavior and promoting the good of the bacterial population. To do so they introduced a gene circuit, which consists of two modules, into the bacteria. If the "suicide module" is active it leads to the rupture and death of some bacterial cells when they are challenged with the antibiotic 6-aminopenicillanic acid. If the "public good" module is expressed, a modified form of the enzyme beta-lactamase is produced, which protects surviving cells from rupture or lysis by breaking down the antibiotic. This protection only occurs when the enzyme is released from inside the bacterial cells that make the ultimate sacrifice and die after rupture.

"Our results clearly demonstrate that it is possible to have conditions where the death of some bacteria confers an advantage for the overall population of bacteria," remarked You. "The optimal death rate for the bacterial population emerges after sufficient time has passed and is clearly visible in our system."

The scientists were also able to provide a possible explanation for the "Eagle effect", an unexpected phenomenon where bacteria appear to grow better when treated with higher antibiotic concentrations. "Overall our results fill in a conceptual gap in understanding the evolutionary dynamics of programmed bacterial death during stress and have implications for designing intervention strategies for effective treatment of bacterial infections with antibiotics," concluded You.
