Confessions of a Personal Trainer | L Style G Style

Fitness, nutrition, workout, resistance training, personal training, boot camp?all key phrases that I use literally hundreds of times throughout the day. However, between the hours of 8 pm and 6 am, my lululemon attire and ball cap lie neatly retired in the drawer labeled ?trainer clothes.? At the end of the day, I morph from eating, breathing, and thinking fitness into a normal human being. Just like you, I have my bad habits, temptations, and obstacles when it comes to health and fitness. I wasn?t born on the Island of Perfect Bodies and No Taste Buds. It?s true ? I struggle. I have to watch what I eat, understand the consequences of social parties, and drag myself to the gym even when I don?t want to! OK, that?s a lie, I don?t go to the gym if I don?t want to. I?m in a gym all day long, isn?t that enough?!

I?m sure you?re asking yourself, ?Why is this trainer, the expert on fitness, the guy who?s supposed to be amped about working out and lead a perfect lifestyle, disclosing that he, too, sometimes stumbles in his quest to stay fit?? It?s simple; I tell you about my own imperfections because I can relate to you. I understand the struggles. In seven years of training, I have worked with people of all shapes and sizes, ages, and professions, with countless limitations and unique personalities. Each brought a new challenge and a greater understanding of what it means to be ?fit and healthy.? Being able to build rapport and develop an organic relationship is largely based on relatability and a willingness to embrace another?s perspective. A a fitness professional, I must be able to peel back the layers of self doubt, fears, insecurities and empower my clients through knowledge and accountability.

Keep in mind that your trainer has feelings too; he or she has been there at some point in his or her life and has had to overcome his or her own adversities. I?m blessed to have an amazing co-owner, Joey, and wonderful staff that all have a variety of life experiences. To share a relevant story ? four years ago a young lady named Caroline walked though our doors needing to get in shape. After two years of hard work, over 100 lbs lost, and a new perspective on life, she joined our team and is now our lead trainer. This is just one of many stories from our HEAT family of trainers. Diversity is our foundation, relatability is our motto, fitness is our journey. We look forward to educating, inspiring, and keeping you accountable from within the pages of this blog. Enjoy!

Cave Shooting Collection Heading to Japan

A costly collection of tough shmups

Cave Shooting Collection

Japanese shoot-em-up maker CAVE is one of the few developers responsible for keeping the shmup genre alive (and, some would argue, for the genre's ever-dwindling popularity). We've covered several of their Xbox 360 shooters in our Co-Op International column, including Dodonpachi Resurrection and Espgaluda II. Now Japanese fans who have somehow abstained from buying most or all of the company's Xbox 360 output have reason to rejoice. The Cave Shooting Collection is coming to retail overseas, complete with a whopping 9 retail shmups, all of their DLC, and the company's sole XBLA genre entry, Guwange.

Sungrazing comets as solar probes

ScienceDaily (Dec. 6, 2012) ? To observe how winds move high in Earth's atmosphere, scientists sometimes release clouds of barium as tracers to track how the material corkscrews, blows around, and changes composition in response to high altitude winds -- but scientists have no similar technique to study the turbulent atmosphere of the sun.

So researchers were excited in December 2011, when Comet Lovejoy swept right through the sun's corona with its long tail streaming behind it. Several missions -- including NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), NASA's Solar and Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO), ESA/NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) and the JAXA/NASA mission Hinode -- captured images of the comet, showing how its long tail was buffeted by systems around the sun, offering scientists a unique way of observing movement as if they'd orchestrated the experiment themselves.

This unexpected set of observations captured the attention of scientists, bringing two research communities together: comet researchers who can use solar observations for their studies and solar scientists can use comet observations to study the sun.

Scientists recently shared their results at the 2012 Fall American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco, Calif., and how the comet helped highlight the intensely dynamic environment in the sun's atmosphere, the corona. Since comet tails are rapidly ionized by losing electrons in that hot environment, their movement is affected by the sun's magnetic field. Thus the tail's path can act as a tracer of the complex magnetic system higher up in the corona. Understanding such magnetic systems is a crucial part of space weather research and the study of how magnetic energy is converted to giant explosions on the sun such as solar flares or coronal mass ejections.

Comet Lovejoy is a kind of comet known as a sungrazer, which swings particularly close to the sun. Since SOHO launched in1995, it has shown us thousands more sungrazer comets than any tool ever has before -- almost 2,400 comets as of November 2012. Because we are in a period of high sun grazing comet activity, scientist's can expect many more chances to watch these natural research satellites in the coming years. Another large comet is expected to have a close solar pass on November 21, 2013. This comet is roughly the size of Hale-Bopp, so it should give quite a show.

LePage continues attack on Democratic tracker at swearing-in ...

AUGUSTA, Maine ? Gov. Paul LePage, still upset that the Maine Democratic Party has hired a tracker to record him on video at public events, swore in new Democratic majorities in the Senate and House on Wednesday and pledged to work with them during the coming legislative session.

?I?m very distinguished. I?ve been honored to have a private paparazzi paid for by the Democratic Party,? LePage said before swearing in the new Senate, joking that the party should have hired a Mainer ? rather than someone from Massachusetts ? for the job.

?I think it?s vulgar, I think it?s vicious, and I think it?s vile to me and my family,? he said. ?I say that to you, for the lack of respect that the office of the governor of the state of Maine is receiving. Having said that, we have to go to work. I want to work with each and every one of you.?

LePage?s remarks came a day after the governor called off an introductory meeting scheduled with the new Legislature?s Democratic leaders, House Speaker Mark Eves and Senate President Justin Alfond, after the Democratic Party?s tracker filmed him at a Veterans Day event last month and attended a Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce event Tuesday at which LePage was speaking.

LePage said he would meet with Alfond and Eves if they called on the Democratic Party to stop recording him in public. Alfond and Eves had been attempting to schedule a meeting with LePage since shortly after last month?s elections.

A handful of fellow Republicans criticized LePage for bringing his dispute with a Democratic Party tracker to the Legislature?s inaugural ceremonies.

?If you say you have respect for the institution and the constitution, then you ought to show some,? said Rep. Lance Harvell, R-Farmington. ?This fight he?s having with his tracker, it doesn?t belong here this day.?

While LePage?s concerns about political trackers and campaign tactics are legitimate, Harvell said, the governor risked alienating new Republican lawmakers who could become his allies by raising those concerns at the swearing-in ceremonies.

?I really don?t see how we hold this caucus together with that approach,? Harvell said.

Rep. Russell Black, R-Wilton, said he agreed that dispatching a video tracker to record LePage at all times in public isn?t appropriate.

?But I don?t understand it today,? he said of LePage?s remarks. ?It just doesn?t make sense, and it?s just not appropriate.?

In addition to taking the oath of office, representatives and senators on Wednesday formally elected their leaders. The Senate selected Alfond, who lives in Portland, as Senate president. Alfond won the job over the Republicans? nominee for the post, Sen. Garrett Mason of Lisbon.

The House selected Eves, who lives in North Berwick. House Republicans didn?t challenge him.

In a speech after his election as Senate president, Alfond recognized his Republican colleagues and LePage and promised a collegial spirit for the coming legislative session.

?Even as we meet here today, there are those on both sides spoiling for a fight, and expecting the worst ? a showdown in Augusta between the Blaine House and the Legislature,? he said. ?I say, let?s disappoint them.?

While the speech wasn?t heavy on policy specifics, Alfond called for a blueprint for job growth, tailored to each region of the state.

Eves also called on both parties in the House to work together to address the state?s budget situation, as state revenue collections are expected to fall short of projections and the state?s Medicaid program faces a $100 million budget gap.

?We must work together,? Eves said. ?The challenges we face are too big for one party to solve alone.?

Lawmakers on Wednesday also formally elected the state?s constitutional officers, selecting Democrat Matthew Dunlap of Old Town as secretary of state, Janet Mills of Farmington as attorney general, Neria Douglass of Auburn as state treasurer and Pola Buckley of Hallowell as state auditor.

Dunlap, Mills and Douglass will serve two-year terms. Buckley will serve four years. The constitutional officers are expected to assume office in January.

Dunlap and Mills will both return to jobs they held until 2010, when Republicans elected to legislative majorities voted them out of office.

Douglass is finishing her second four-year term as state auditor. Buckley currently works as a principal auditor in the state auditor?s office.

Rare tornado kills three in New Zealand's biggest city

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - Three people were killed and several injured after an unusual storm, described by witnesses as a "mini tornado", hit New Zealand's largest city of Auckland on Thursday, toppling trees and ripping debris from a construction site.

The tornado, driven by a powerful storm cell, tore concrete slabs from a building site and dropped them onto a truck, killing two people inside, a fire services spokesman said.

Rescue teams were searching a school site for workers thought to be trapped beneath fallen concrete blocks in the west Auckland suburb of Hobsonville, The New Zealand Herald newspaper reported.

Details on the third death were not immediately available. At least seven people injured in the storm were sent to hospital.

"I saw it coming across the river, the air went very electric and the sky went black. And then the wind started to whistle. This was like a juggernaut roaring through here," witness Suzanne McFadden told New Zealand's Newstalk ZB radio.

Hobsonville is the site of a new town centre near Auckland, which is home to 1.3 million people, roughly a third of the New Zealand population.

Military personnel were going from door to door in the area to check if more people were trapped and authorities warned of more severe weather to come later on Thursday.

New Zealand has been hit by several natural disasters in recent years, including a magnitude 6.3 earthquake that struck the southern city of Christchurch in 2011, killing 185 people. Another tornado in Auckland last May killed one person.

The Christchurch quake caused damage worth NZ$15 billion to insurers, making it the country's costliest natural disaster.
