Escondido?s Becker honored as Model Coach

Escondido High?s Lori Becker has been named a Model Coach Award winner by the California Interscholastic Federation.

Becker has coached volleyball and basketball during her 25 years at Escondido. A 1979 graduate of Orange Glen, Becker also has coached at El Cajon Valley and San Pasqual. She?s compiled more than 500 career volleyball wins.

Also honored from the San Diego Section was Calvin Armstrong of Calexico High. Armstrong has coached football and track and field for nearly 40 years.

Model Coaches are honored for teaching the CIF?s core values and embracing its goal of Pursuing Victory with Honor. This year?s 14 recipients were nominated through their local section offices.

Baseball fundraiser

Vista High baseball will hold its annual golf fundraiser at 10:30 a.m. Monday at The Golf Club of California in Fallbrook. Sponsorships and entries are being sought. Information at (760) 631-4788 and vistahsbaseball.com.

Recruiting seminar

National college recruiting expert Jack Renkens will conduct a seminar for high school athletes at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hilltop High in Chula Vista. Admission is free.

Alumni game

San Marcos will hold its baseball alumni game Feb. 23. Batting practice starts at 9 a.m. with the game scheduled for about noon on the varsity field.

Coaches and ADs

A clinic for coaches and athletic directors is planned for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 13 at Scripps Ranch High.

Former football coaches and ADs scheduled to speak are John Shacklett (Morse), Jim Arnaiz (Helix), Ed Burke (San Dieguito and Torrey Pines) and Herb Meyer (Oceanside and El Camino). Oceanside football coach John Carroll also is among the speakers.
